Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in responding. It was a holiday here in the US last
weekend so I'm just now getting back to my desk.
As Edward noted, we did not get that many responses to our survey which
I think shows that Topic Maps have not made significant inroads into the
Library community, at least here in the US. Edward and I presented a
session at this year's LITA forum (Library Information Technology
Association) and it was met with quite a bit of enthusiasm. Here is a
link to our powerpoint presentation.

We would love to have interested parties contribute to the Wiki. I had
to password protect it since it was getting a lot of spam. Here's the
user id and password.

We also have a not especially active interest group for Topic Maps set
up within LITA. I believe it could be more active but time is the
problem. Actually finding the time to work on suitable applications of
Topic Maps for libraries is the major impediment to their wider use.
Currently the tools for creating good topic maps that can be easily
presented and accessed require a certain amount of technical expertise
or some investment of library funds, both of which are in short supply
and great demand in libraries. The development of such tools is
something that would probably revolutionize their use. For example, in a
recent article that Edward and I wrote for Library Hi Tech, we posited
that a vendor supplied tool that allowed subject bibliographers to
easily create Topic Map driven bibliographies would be a real hit.
In any case, thanks to all for starting this listserve. Hopefully we
will be able to accomplish more collectively than we would on our own.

Subject: [TopicMapsInLIS] Inaugurating the list
Dear members of the list,
As Kevin Trainor said, I "have gotten in on the ground floor" because
I was the first one to subscribe... And actually, what I have are some
questions to start our dialog:
Did Suellen Stringer-Hye and Edward Iglesias have published the survey
you made about the use of Topic Maps in libraries? I found the message
you posted in the topicmapmail mailing list, but the format of the
survey is not longer available, and I couldn't find more information
about it. I also found a a wiki (
http://tm4lib.library.vanderbilt.edu/wiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HomePage)
that hasn't received "donations". But maybe we can start!
Also, if possible, I would like to ask Suellen Stringer-Hye to allow
me read her article (or share it in the list) "A Librarian's
Introduction to Topic Maps".
Thank you very much, and many greetings!
Liliana Melgar
